History of cosmetics

The name of cosmetic is coming from greek word Kosmeticos witch means adorn.
First use of cosmetics dated more than 7000 years ago. More usage of cosmetics by men and women started with Egyptians around 5000 years ago.

The Egyptians for a pleasent smell and softeness of their skin were used incense oil and for natural blush were used crushed flowers. Also the first to use black antimony based paint as eyeliner.Egyptian women apply galena and malachite to their faces for color and definition.
Chinese women use rice powder to make their face white and stain their fingernails with gelatin and eggs.
Grecian women use chalk and white lead to paint their faces and crushed mulberries as rouge.
Basic ingredients for perfumes are lavender, lily ,peppermint and rosemary.
Around 14th century France and Italy became main centers of cosmetics manufacturing in Europe.
17th century is beginning of cosmetics development in USA.
David McConnell founds the California Perfume company selling 5millions units during war I.
In 1866 zinc oxide became base of face powder.
In 1894 Henry Daley found Manufacturing perfumes Associations.
Eugene Schueller in 1909 invents synthetic hair dye “Oreal” today is L’Oréal Company.
T.L. Williams in 1910 create Maybelline mascara.
In 1928 sellers first products- toothbrush and powdered cleanser known today Avon.Same year Max Factor-unveils first lip gloss.
1932 became year of discovery of unique process for nail enamel by brothers Charles and Joseph Revson who founded Revlon company.
In 1934 Drene the first detergent-shampoo was introduced into marketplace by Procter &Gamble.
In 1952 Mum first company launches first roll on deodorant.
In 1955 Crest toothpaste was introduced on marketplace by Procter&Gamble.
In 1965 first aerosol deodorant introduced by Gillette’Right Guard.
Around 1980 was year of change from makeup that was natural and light to heavy layers of bright colors such blue, orange and green. Was the year for taking the look to extreme.

In 1989 first company who stop testing their beauty products on animals was Avon.
In 2004 European Union implements an animal testing ban on finished cosmetics products.
